How To Use Twitter For Your Online Business

How To Grow Your Online Business Using Twitter

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a fast-paced social media platform used by people all over the world. On Twitter people post content called "tweets" which can be retweeted (re-shared), liked and replied to by their followers. Twitter is based heavily around hashtags and has trending pages about the most popular topics in categories such as entertainment, sports and news.

All in all, Twitter should not be overlooked for your online business.

Why Twitter?

While most social media apps are based on visuals, Twitter focuses mainly on text. This makes Twitter marketing a lot easier for your business because you don't have to prepare images like you would for Instagram.

In addition to that, if you haven't noticed, everything is from Twitter. If you scroll through Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest, you'll most likely run across a screenshot of something from Twitter. It's the most versatile social media platform and everything gets recycled from Twitter.

Let's dive into exactly how Twitter can grow your online business.

Find People In Your Industry

One of the best things you can do for yourself and your business is to build relationships with people in your industry. Forming good business relationships can lead to promotional and paid opportunities. Twitter is a great way to make friends and learn from people in your industry.

Here are some ways to find people in your industry on Twitter:

  • Suggested following: Twitter will analyze your account and the people you follow to recommend other profiles for you to follow. This feature is great if you're looking to follow people in the same industry as you. To find the suggested following tab (sometimes called 'you might like or "who to follow")  go to your Twitter profile and scroll down on mobile or look on the right-hand side if you're on a computer.
  • Search: One of the simplest ways to find people is to search in exactly what you're looking for and follow the accounts that pop up. I suggest scrolling further down on the list to find smaller accounts because these are the people that will most likely want to form relations with you.
  • Use hashtags: Search in hashtags relevant to your business and look at the accounts engaging with the tweets. This is a great way to find tons of people interested in the same things as you in a short amount of time.

Promote Your Online Business

Another way to use Twitter for your online business and the one your probably most interested in is promotion. Twitter is a great way to promote your online business because of how simple it is to engage with your audience. After uploading a tweet, other users can reply and ask you questions about your products or services. This is a great way to better understand and figure out how you can provide more value to your audience.

Here are some ways you can promote your business on Twitter:

Add Links To Your Tweets

Like I said before, Twitter is an app-based around text, use this to your advantage. Create tweets that link back to your online business and post them under the right hashtags. What's even better is that Twitter encourages links. If you add a website link to your tweet Twitter will automatically add a snippet of the website to prompt your followers to click.

Participate In Twitter Threads

Another popular feature is Twitter threads. Threads are basically a collection of Tweets all relating back to one topic or question. I participate in multiple twitter threads daily to promote my blog and I even run my own. Start searching for Twitter threads in your niche and participate.

Use Hashtags

Twitter is based around hashtags and if used right they can get your content seen by a larger audience. Find the right hashtags for your online business and start using them.

Find sponsorships & Paid Opportunities

Get your online business out there and make a profit with paid opportunities from Twitter. Brands and other accounts are constantly posting tweets asking for people to help promote their products.

Here are some ways to find paid opportunities:
  • Use Hashtags: If you look under the #bloggerswanted or #influencerwanted, you'll find a bunch of people looking for businesses to collaborate with. The downside of this is that the competition is tough because hundreds of other people are looking through this hashtag as well.
  • Your Followers: If you follow people in your industry you might be able to find what companies they've worked with and reach out to those same companies. It is also possible that your followers might even share some sponsorship opportunities they have available.

The Downsides of Twitter Marketing

I find it easier to grow on Twitter compared to other social media platforms, but the engagement is low. My account has 400+ followers but my tweets only get about 10 likes. This is probably because of how fast-paced the app is like I said before.

Research shows that the lifespan of a tweet is 30 minutes before it gets buried under other content. Therefore, you have to be very active to stand out on Twitter. You can't post one tweet pertaining to your business and expect to see great results like you would on Instagram. You need to constantly be posting and promoting your online business to see results with Twitter.

My Thoughts On Using Twitter For Your Online Business

In my opinion, Twitter is not as good as Pinterest but better than Instagram. Pinterest is made is drive traffic to external links but Twitter is more for engaging with your community. I love Twitter for my blog because it's a great platform for networking and finding your community. I've made a lot of friends using Twitter and get to connect with bloggers on a day-to-day basis.
