How To Explode Your Instagram Engagement Right Now!

To thrive in the world of Instagram, or any social media platform for that matter, you must have engaged followers. Having thousands of disengaged followers would be like sitting in a conference hall filled with people who are all ignoring you. No one wants to be there, and you shouldn’t either!

If you are active on Instagram, you’ve probably seen the sheer power behind being an “Influencer.” Everyone wants to know what the Influencer is sharing, what they are doing, where they are going, and so on. These are engaged followers.

So how do you build that cult-like following of people who truly care what you have to share? Take a look at these 10 ways to take action right now to start growing your Instagram following. Even if you don’t do everything on this list, you are guaranteed to grow your following and create a more engaged
audience.

1. Post Unique and Appealing Content

Now this one is probably obvious. Post images and content that other people will enjoy. Most people will get bored with posts of every meal you’ve ever eaten. Think outside of the box and let your creative side flow. Instagram is all about sharing your creative side with the world and providing value. If there is no value or creativity, why should anyone follow you?

One thing that is important to note here: Instagram has recently started testing the idea of removing the “likes” feature. If (and when) this becomes a reality, posting for likes becomes irrelevant. This means it’s time to do away with the same posts everyone else is sharing, and start being different. You
are creative, show this creativity to the world!

2. Post to Instagram Regularly

Consistency is key. To grow an engaged audience, you should be trying to post 1-3 per day. From this article, How Often Should you Post on Instagram, major brands post 1.5 times per day on average. Having said that, if posting 2 or 3 times per day does not allow you to stay consistent, you should not go this route. The more you can post the better, but consistency trumps all.

3.  Use All Your Hashtags

This one might also seem obvious for most, but using hashtags in your posts can be a huge way to drive your organic reach. Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post. Use those puppies up!

Instagram hashtags (tags) search

When writing the description for your post, start with “# + specific keyword” related to your post/target audience. Once you start typing your keyword, you should see a bunch of suggestions of hashtags you can use. This will also tell you how many people are using those specific hashtags. If you aren’t quite sure where to start best-hashtags.com is a great tool. Just type in the keyword you want to target and Best-Hashtags.com will give you various options of 30 hashtags that you can copy and paste right into your post.

4. Engage With at Least 10-15 Different People Per Day

By far the number one way to grow an engaged audience is to also do the engaging. Branch out and communicate with people. Tell them how much you like their photo or their message. Ask them a question. Show people that you actually care and aren’t just on Instagram fishing for likes and comments. Set yourself a goal to find and comment on at least 10-15 different posts each day.
If you can do more, great!

Reaching out and communicating with people WILL TAKE TIME. You won’t be able to comment on 3 posts and expect the world to follow you back. Engaging with others will be a grind, but I guarantee you will see results.

Engage More With Your Followers

Showing that you care can go a long way. If you regularly engage with what your followers are posting, they are more likely to reciprocate. Think of engaging with others like building and growing real relationships. It doesn’t happen overnight, but with time, you can build a strong, supportive following.

Engage With Others In Your Industry/ Area of Interest

Click the Search button on Instagram and look for specific keywords or hashtags in your related field or area of interest. From there, find posts that interest you and comment on them, like them, and follow them if you like what they post. You don’t need to follow everyone that has a post you like, but in some cases, you will get a follow and/or comment back.

5. Reply to People Who Comment on Your Post

If you start getting comments on your posts, be sure to reply back to them. Someone is taking time out of their day to leave you a message, the least you can do is reply back.

Think about replying and interacting with people as if it is the first time you are meeting someone face-to-face. You will likely extend your arm out for a handshake and introduce yourself. Now imagine that person did not reciprocate and extend their hand back to you, but instead just walked away.

That’s what it is like when you don’t reply to someone’s gesture. If it is the first impression, sometimes that’s the only one you get. A simple “Thank you!” can go a long way.

6. Write Long-Form Descriptions

Filling a description with hashtags isn’t the only way to provide value to your post and keep followers engaged. This description box can be a great way to give others a little more insight into your life, business, etc. and allow them to connect with you on a deeper level.

Mix in some posts that use longer-form descriptions. Tell the story behind the picture you are sharing. This allows your followers to actually connect and relate with you and your content.

7. Use Instagram Stories

Everyone knows how popular Snapchat has become, and Instagram wants a piece of that pie as well. Thus, you have Instagram stories. According to Chalene Johnson, you should be trying to post roughly 10 times to your Instagram Story per day (How Many Instagram Stories Should you Post Per Day?).

But why?

Social media has gone all-in with video content. Each network is pushing harder and harder for videos because they are much easier to consume than text or blog posts. Instagram Stories are no different. The advantage you have by posting consistently (again this is key) and often, is that when you post, your Instagram “bubble” moves to the front of your followers’ order. This means your videos from your story would be the first thing your followers see when they look at Instagram Stories.

Instagram Stories
The most recent Story posted will show up first in the list.

Chalene (@ChaleneJohnson) says that 10 is the magic number for your stories. If you post more than 10, most people won’t stick around to watch all the way through. Another important note is to make sure your stories are posted throughout the course of the day rather than all at once. This ensures
that even if your stories start to fall down the list of most recent, you can still jump back up to the top of your followers’ list.

9. Boost Your Most Popular Post

If you have a little bit of extra cash lying around, try boosting some of your more popular posts that are already starting to get engagement from your followers.

Instagram sponsored post
If you are not yet familiar with setting up sponsored or promoted posts, Instagram allows you to choose your budget and duration for the promotion. You can target specific audiences and try to reach more people outside of your current follower's list. It is easy to start promoting your posts, but if you need some extra help Instagram Sponsored Posts: Everything You Need to Know is a good place to start.

It is important to note that you must have an Instagram Business Account in order to run ads and promotions with your posts. It is very easy to switch your current account to a business account and you can switch back at any time.

10. Start a Content Calendar on Trello

Staying organized can be difficult, especially when working in teams. There are many apps out there that help alleviate some of that stress, but Trello is great for managing social media accounts, for teams AND individuals.

Use the Trello Calendar Power-Up to create your own social media content calendar
With the Trello Calendar power-up, everyone can be looking at the same board and contribute to content calendars, brainstorm ideas, and plan out their social media strategy. If you have heard about Trello, think about giving it a try. It is a lot of fun to use and is free to get started. Start Increasing Your Engagements

You don’t have to do everything all at once, especially if you are just getting started with Instagram. In fact, if you are new to Instagram, I’d recommend not trying to do everything listed here. Just pick a few items from the list and start incorporating them into your daily routine. As you become more
comfortable, add on to your daily tasks.

If you are going to try any of the items listed above, start with the engagements! This is hands-down the single most important aspect of growing any social media account. The more you communicate with others, the more people will likely communicate back with you. Take care of your Instagram followers and they will take care of you.

Of all the items listed above, which do you currently do and which ones could you spend more time on? Let us know in the comments below!
